The nominations: Chris Hemsworth announced the names of the Oscar nominees on Thursday morningFinally, the much awaited 2014 Oscar nominees list is out. And this year there are quite a few surprises as some prominent movies were noticeably omitted by the academy. ‘The Butler’ which starred Oprah Wilfrey’s, ‘Mandela’ which starred Idris Elba and ‘Saving Mr Banks’starring Tom Hanks are some of the movies that were snubbed by the academy this year.
The good thing however is that African stars were recognized. British born actor of Nigerian descent Chiwetel Ejiofor got a Best Actor nod for his role in the acclaimed movie ’12 Years a Slave’, Yale graduate and Kenyan rising star Lupita Nyong’o got a Best Supporting actress nod for same movie while Somalia’s Barkhad Abdi got Best Supporting actor nod for Captain Phillips.

ContinueApart from the African stars shining bright this year, what gladdens my heart is that one of the greatest actors to have walked the face of the earth Leonardo Dicaprio was not snubbed this time around as he was for Django Unchained-in which he acted exceptionally well. It baffles me that Dicarprio in his impressive film career has just received 4 academy nominations: What’s Eating Gilbert Grape(1994-Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role), The Aviator (2005-Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role), Blood Diamond(2007-Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role), and most recently Wolf of Wall Street(2014- Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role), and has NEVER won any. In fact, in his entire career, he has won just two awards, Golden Globes- in 2005 for Aviator and 2014 for Wolf of Wall Street. Hopefully, with his win at the Globes this year, the trend will continue till the Oscars…Amen. I could go on and on about Leonardo, I think his talent is out of this world, and he has so far been under appreciated.
Overall, American Hustle and Gravity lead this year’s Oscars with 10 nominations each, followed by 12 Years a Slave with 9. Captain Phillips – 6. Dallas Buyers Club – 6. Nebraska – 6. Her – 5 and The Wolf of Wall Street – 5. See full list below:
Looking good: The 30-year-old Thor star and Academy President Cheryl Boone do the honors
